Now, based on the information you have reviewed in this case study, use the COS Decision Tree and Descriptor Bucket List (provided on this page as attachments) to select one of the COS rating ranges listed below for Dylan for each of the three early childhood outcomes. If you feel as though you are unable to come to a decision about a rating in a particular area, think about what other information you would need in order to do so.

• Not Age-Appropriate, i.e., COS score of:
  • 1--Relative to same age peers, child's functioning might be described as like that of a much younger child; shows early skills, but not yet immediate foundational or age-expected skills in the outcome area;
  • 2--Relative to same age peers, child is showing some emerging or immediate foundational skills, which will help him to work toward age-appropriate skills in the outcome area; OR
  • 3--Relative to same-age peers, child is not yet using skills expected of his age, but does use many important and immediate foundational skills to build upon in the outcome area.
• Some Not Age-Appropriate/Some Age-Appropriate, i.e., COS score of:
  • 4--Relative to same age peers, child shows occasional use of some age-expected skills, but more of his skills are not yet age-expected in the outcome area; OR
  • 5--Relative to same age peers, child shows many age-expected skills, but continues to show some functioning that might be described like that of a slightly younger child in the outcome area.
• Overall Age-Appropriate, i.e. COS score of:
  • 6--Relative to same age peers, child has the skills that we would expect of his age in regard to the outcome area; however, there are concerns with how he [functional area that is of concern/quality of ability/lacking skill]; OR
  • 7--Relative to same age peers, child has all of the skills that we would expect of a child his age in the outcome area.
