My HM Journey: Part 1

Assessment Icon

Throughout this module, you will lead your students on a habits-and-mindsets (HM) journey toward greater success in school and in life by developing Habits of Mind, character strengths, and a growth mindset. In the weeks ahead, you will explore the impact of introducing, modeling, explicitly teaching, and embedding Habits of Mind and character strengths in your curriculum and in students’ social interactions, along with cultivating a growth mindset in every student.

To gauge the distance that you and your students will cover in developing specific dispositions and mindsets, you will need to establish a baseline. For this Assessment, you will describe your students, classroom, and goals.

In Week 7, you will revisit this starting point and see how far you’ve come along your HM Journey.

Instructions:

  • Read and view the resources to cement your understanding of the 16 Habits of Mind, the 24 universal character strengths, and a growth mindset that are the focus of this module.

  • Starting with Week 1, record daily notes with observations and anecdotes on the following:

    • Habits of Mind and character strengths that you recognize in yourself and how you model them for student

    • Traits of a growth mindset that you model, as well as any traits of a fixed mindset that you recognize in yourself

    • Habits of Mind, character strengths, and traits of a growth mindset that you recognize in your students and how they contribute to students’ success

    • Behaviors and attitudes, including traits of a fixed mindset, that are roadblocks to students’ success and how they impede, undermine, or even obstruct teaching and learning in your classroom

    • Habits of Mind, character strengths, and traits of a growth mindset that students need to develop or deepen to support their academic achievement and social competence

  • Based on your notes from Week 1 and into Week 2, write a 1- to 2-page sketch of yourself, your students, and your classroom environment that will serve as a baseline, or starting point, as you begin your HM Journey.

    • Describe the prevailing mindset among your students, specific student behaviors and fixed-mindset traits to change, particular Habits of Mind and character strengths that students need to develop, as well as specific Habits of Mind, character strengths, and growth mindsets in you and your students on which to build.

    • Include your goals for your HM Journey in this module and insights gained from the resources that can help guide your progress.

Looking Ahead

In Week 7, you will complete My HM Journey: Part 2, in which you will write a comparison between the baseline you described in your My HM Journey: Part 1 and your progress in developing targeted Habits of Mind and character strengths, and growth mindsets. Also in Part 2 you will report on the resulting impact on students as hardworking, interested, joyful, and passionate learners who are invested in their own education and success, and identify actions you will take to continue your journey.

Save this Assessment as “MyHMJourneyPart1_firstinitiallastname.doc” and submit it to the Gradebook by the end of Week 2.

Please proceed to the Discussion.
