Assessment Evaluation on Whiston Checklist (Whole Group)
Introduction:
One important task of any counselor is to evaluate assessments, tests, and inventories that are used in the counseling practice. This is very important since few tests are normed and intended for a diverse participant group.
Directions:
-
Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings.
-
Choose an assessment from the sources below and evaluate it carefully using the Whiston Checklist.
-
Choose a test from the Mental Measurements Yearbook found in the JHU databases, or use one of the assessments from your package of tests and assessments that has been sent to you for this course. The BDI or SEI that you have covered already would also be good options! You can look up any assessment in the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. Once you use this link, scroll down to the tests and measures section, and choose any of the tests and measurement databases. The Mental Measurement Yearbook With Tests in Print is found there.
-
Use the Burros' site for assessment information – the top three articles listed here are excellent helps to evaluation an assessment.
-
Be sure to use your Counseling Guide library sources and to reference them when appropriate. If you look up at the tabs at the top of the page, notice the tab “Tests” with the drop down arrow. There are many resources here that the librarians have set up for you already to use.
-
There are many articles in the JHU database as well. Simply use the key words from the test or assessment you wish to use, and then search for the articles that review or have critiqued the assessment. You can access the database from the counseling guide page listed above.

By Saturday, post a response in the whole group discussion forum titled, Week 6: Assessment Evaluation on Whiston Checklist. Please keep in mind the population that you intend to work with as you evaluate the assessment you have chosen and remember to use the Counseling Guide pages in our online library!
- Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week and contribute at least two additional substantive postings to two different students by Monday. Be sure that you are substantially discussing the information with your classmates, and not just agreeing or disagreeing with them. Short comments or acknowledgements will not earn the points desired for a passing grade.
Assignment: Weekly Quizzes (Individual)
Introduction:
There is a quiz each week that is taken directly from the textbook, and covers items you will need to know to prepare you for the NCE exam. The quiz contains all multiple choice questions, and they come directly from the text. These are open book, open note quizzes, and they must be completed by the end of each week.
Each quiz will reset on Sunday, for anyone who needs to retake it. You may retake it for more new questions, or you may retake it to increase your grade. In either case, when there are two grades, the highest grade will be used for your final grade. If there is one grade, that will be used. Taking it twice cannot harm your grade. Correct answers are posted after the quiz is no longer available for a grade; which is two weeks following the week it was made available.
