Research in Fundamentals of College Admissions Counseling (Whole Group)
Introduction:
This activity is simply to familiarize you with the research data available to you in this area of study. It is worthwhile for any counselor to know, and is useful for a wide range of individuals, especially with the economy as it is today. The reading is simply the first chapter of a great book, Fundamentals of College Admissions Counseling (NACAC, 2008). You will need to read the chapter, and then use the bibliography for the activity below.
Directions:
-
Be sure that you have completed this week's assigned readings before completing this activity.
-
By Thursday, post your short annotation in the whole group discussion forum titled, Week 13: Research in Fundamentals of College Admissions Counseling by responding to the prompt below:
Choose one of the articles from the references listed at the end of the Fundamentals of College Admissions Counseling (NACAC, 2008) article provided in the readings, locate in the online databases, read it, and write a simple annotation for it. This is to be a very short annotation (less than 200 words) and if you need more information about annotated bibliographies, refer to the Annotated Bibliography Directions. It will give you more information about Annotated Bibliographies. Be sure to copy/paste the annotation into the textbox for ease of reading, and to ALSO attach an APA correct copy in Word to your post so that the person who organizes the bibliography has the correct APA format from your work.
The annotation should include:- bibliographic data (a sentence or two that describes the author's credentials, purpose, and audience
- summary of main points or research study and findings (a brief “capsule” summary of its content)
- critique of the article (a couple sentences at the end of the summary that explains why this source seems valuable and how you might use it
-
APA reference; be sure that the reference is APA and is written correctly.
If someone wishes, after reading the chapter, instead of writing the your annotation, you should put everyone’s annotations into an APA document and post it for everyone’s reference library of information for future papers, and future references. You will receive full credit for the assignment if you choose to do so. If two students wish to do this together, that is fine also.
-
Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week and by Saturday, read through the annotations posted by your classmates. You may respond if you wish, but are not required to since the week is so full.
Assignment: Weekly Quizzes (Individual)
Introduction:
There is a quiz each week that is taken directly from the textbook, and covers items you will need to know to prepare you for the NCE exam. The quiz contains all multiple choice questions, and they come directly from the text. These are open book, open note quizzes, and they must be completed by the end of each week.
Each quiz will reset on Sunday, for anyone who needs to retake it. You may retake it for more new questions, or you may retake it to increase your grade. In either case, when there are two grades, the highest grade will be used for your final grade. If there is one grade, that will be used. Taking it twice cannot harm your grade. Correct answers are posted after the quiz is no longer available for a grade; which is two weeks following the week it was made available.
