Assessment Using the SCL-90-R - JADA (Whole Group)

Introduction:

It is important to understand how the clinical scales are used with both children and adults. The Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) and the Symptom Checklist Revised (SCLR) are assessments that measure clinical ranges of behavior and distress. You will complete the SCLR for the whole group activity this week.

Directions:

  1. Be sure that you have completed this week's assigned readings before completing this activity.

  2. Read the directions and complete the SCLR-90-R assessment. Then, set it aside. You now have an idea of what kind of information it is requesting from the client. (Please Note: You may bring this to the optional face-to-face meeting, if you wish to score your own. The scoring templates will be available.)

  3. Read the case study for Jada.

  4. By Saturday, post your response in the whole group discussion forum titled, Week 12: Assessment Using the SCL-90-R JADA, by answering the questions below in a concise summary:

    • Interpret Jada’s scores on the three global indices (e.g., GSI, PSDI, and PST).
    • Were any of Jada’s scores on the primary symptom dimensions “clinically significant”? If yes, identify the dimension(s) and interpret the score(s)
    • Are Jada’s scores on the SCL-90-R consistent with the information presented in the case study? Explain.
    • What inferences can you make about Jada based on the background information and her scores on the SCL-90-R?
    • What would you recommend for her?

  5. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week and contribute at least two additional substantive postings to two different students by Monday. Be sure that you are substantially discussing the information with your classmates, and not just agreeing or disagreeing with them. Short comments or acknowledgements will not earn the points desired for a passing grade.

CBCL/6-18 Sabrina (Whole Group)

Introduction:

The Child Behavior Checklist for children between the ages of 6 and 18 has several different formats that are commonly used. Typically a comprehensive approach is used where the parent(s) fills out the CBCL (or you can during the interview with the parent), the teacher fills out the Teacher Report Form (TRF), and the child fills out the Youth Self-Report if able to (YSR). There is also a preschool version now that is based on observation and it ranges from 1.5 years to 5 years old, but we will not be working with it at all.

Directions:

  1. Be sure that you have completed this week's assigned readings before completing this activity.

  2. Read the ASEBA manual materials and ASEBA Chapters 1 and 2 so that you understand clearly what is being measured.

  3. After reading the information from the ASEBA manual (ASEBA publishes these assessments), then fill out the CBCL, with your own information the best you can. If you want to, recall a particular age in your life, between the ages of 6-18, and take it from that perspective. Remember, that this is not accurate this many years later. The purpose is simply for you to be familiar with the layout and the experience that the child will have when taking the assessment, and to understand the items and how they relate to the scoring.

  4. Download and read the Case Study for Sabrina.

  5. By Saturday, you should post a response in the Week 12: CBCL/6-18- Sabrina whole group forum forum by responding to questions 1-5. This is a short answer response. Please keep your posts concise; on assessment reports, you are required to use factual, concise, and technical writing. It is measurable and descriptive. Be sure that your writing reflects the format above.

    • Identify and interpret the scores for each of the CBCL/6-18 scales that fall in the clinical range (the table below provides the cutoff scores for normal, borderline clinical, and clinical ranges). Use the following example as a format for your answers:
    • Withdrawn/Depressed scale: On the Withdrawn/Depressed scale, June obtained a standard score of 70 (which is greater than the 97th percentile). This indicates that she is functioning in the clinical range. This suggests that that she is experiencing significant psychological symptoms, such as lacking energy, sadness, and withdrawal. She prefers to be alone, won’t open up and talk, and is secretive.
    • Are the CBCL/6-18 results consistent with Sabrina’s background information? Explain.
    • Overall, what do the CBCL/6-18 results tell you about Sabrina?
    • What inferences can you make about Sabrina based on the background information and her scores on the CBCL/6-18?
    • What recommendations would you have for Sabrina and her mother?

  6. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week. Contribute at least two additional substantive postings by Monday.

Assignment: Weekly Quizzes (Individual)

Introduction:

There is a quiz each week that is taken directly from the textbook, and covers items you will need to know to prepare you for the NCE exam. The quiz contains all multiple choice questions, and they come directly from the text. These are open book, open note quizzes, and they must be completed by the end of each week.

Each quiz will reset on Sunday, for anyone who needs to retake it. You may retake it for more new questions, or you may retake it to increase your grade. In either case, when there are two grades, the highest grade will be used for your final grade. If there is one grade, that will be used. Taking it twice cannot harm your grade. Correct answers are posted after the quiz is no longer available for a grade; which is two weeks following the week it was made available.

Directions:

  1. Review the directions and scoring tool for this assignment, located on the Syllabus page.
  2. Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings and have your book with you when you take the quiz.
  3. To take this week's quiz, click on Gradebook and then click on "Quiz 13."
  4. Complete and submit the quiz by the end of this week.
  5. If you need or wish to retake the quiz, click on "Gradebook" and then click on "Quiz 13 Retake."
