Course Basics and Introductions (Whole Group)

Introduction

There are several quick responses and activities we need for you to complete at the beginning of this course: (1) an introduction of yourself to your classmates; (2) upload a current photo of yourself in the ISIS and ELC; and (3) acknowledge that you have completed a review of all sections in the Overview section of this course.

Directions

  1. In the Week 1: Introductions whole group discussion forum, by Friday, please create a new thread in the forum and provide the following information:

    • Brief bio (1-3 sentences)
    • Specific interests in the counseling discipline
    • List five of your favorite songs/books

If you like media, please feel free to post alternative forms other than text, such as audio, visual graphics, or a multimedia presentation to tell us a little about yourself. Creativity is welcome!

  2. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week, engaging in a dialogue with your classmates and instructor, and contribute at least two additional postings to two different students by Monday. Feel free to respond to more than two classmates if you would like. Be sure to try and fill in the composers/authors of the music and books they have listed if you are familiar with them.

  3. It is helpful to put a face to your name.  Please add a photo to ISIS and the ELC.  Also, be sure that the email address you use most frequently use is the correct one in ISIS and the ELC.  Instructions for how to do these tasks are located in the callout box on the right.  Complete this task by Saturday.

  4. Review all pages and materials in the Overview section.  Be sure to download and review all assignments from the Syllabus page.

  5. Review all material in Week 1.

  6. When you are finished reviewing all pages in the Overview section and all pages in the Week 1 section, go the Gradebook.  Locate “Course Acknowledgement" and respond to all questions. Complete this task by Saturday.

Assessment History (Whole Group)

Introduction

Often our own experiences help create a foundation of understanding. For this discussion, please remember back to when you have been tested in prior years, either in school, in counseling, or in preparation for something. In this discussion, we will review and compare individual uses and experiences with testing. As a counselor, you will see this in a new perspective.

Directions

  1. Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings.

  2. By Saturday, post a response in the whole group discussion forum titled, Week 1: Individual Assessment History, by responding to the prompt below:

List the tests that you have taken during your lifetime, and state the purpose for which they were given to you. Then, explain how the test results were used, and what type of feedback that you received about the results. Compare your own experiences with the experiences of others. What commonalities do you find? What differences? What would you do differently?

  3. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week and contribute at least two additional substantive postings to two different students by Monday.

Online Synchronous Class Session (Whole Group)

They reflect the content of the book and are focused on the course objectives for the week. The quizzes cover items you will need to know to prepare for the NCE exam. You can retake the quiz one additional time during each week if you score below an 80%.
