Improving Results for Children

If we want to improve results for children and families, we need quality COS practices embedded throughout the IFSP process. The COS process is both an integral and integrated part of the IFSP process. It is not a separate activity that is done aside from developing the IFSP or without family input. The illustration below shows how the three early childhood outcomes (positive social relationships, acquiring and using knowledge and skills, and taking action to meet needs) are a part of the entire IFSP process. The three smaller orange circles surrounding the IFSP process depict the overall benefits of integrating child outcomes summary within the IFSP process: family engagement, functionality, and age-expected development. As you complete the activities throughout this tutorial, notice the emphasis on each of these benefits and how they are integral parts of the integrated COS/IFSP process.

Integrating COS Into Maryland's IFSP Process

Maryland’s COS/IFSP Integration Workgroup developed a document entitled Framework for Integrating the Three Early Childhood Outcomes into Maryland’s IFSP Process. The items in red in the document indicate where information about the three early childhood outcomes can be embedded in the IFSP process.

Collecting COS-Related Data

COS-related data should be collected at various stages throughout the IFSP process. The downloadable data collection tools listed below can be used to record information at various points in the IFSP process, thus capturing it in formats that are easily accessible and usable during relevant IFSP development and progress monitoring activities. These tools are also available in the Online IFSP under Need Help/COS Resources.
