HOT Rubric

H-O-T is an evaluative rubric used to help individual students and teams process learning and achievement throughout the instructional cycle. H-O-T should be introduced to the class early in the implementation of the Team-Based Cycle of Instruction and the HOT Poster should be displayed prominently so that all students can see it. Explain that H = High Performing, O = OK, and T = Try Harder. Explain that the H-O-T processing will be used throughout the school day as a way of evaluating the whole class, teams, and individuals.

Elaborate on the meaning of H-O-T by creating a class T-chart. Use the HOT Rubric to help students reflect on their demonstration of the Class Standards. Early on, have the class practice using the HOT Evaluative rubric in low risk situations. For example, say to the students, “How did the class do in that class building activity? Were we H, O, or T?” or “How did your team do in transitioning to your lab station? Were you H, O, or T?”
