Choosing Career Assessments (Whole Group)

Introduction:

After reading the chapter, listening to the podcasts, and considering the information available, please choose one of the following questions to respond to. Discuss the posts with your classmates in a substantial way. (You may do both questions if you are so inclined)

Directions:

  1. Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings.

  2. Respond to one of the prompts below:

    • Keeping in mind the setting you will be counseling in (choose a possibility) consider the types of Career Assessments you will use. State the population, and then select an Interest Inventory, a Work Values Inventory, and an Abilities/Skill Inventory, (optionally) a Personality Inventory. Justify why you chose each of them for the population you will be working with, any concerns you might have over their use, as well. It is in the interest of your clients to have searched the Mental Measurements Yearbook and get the details on the assessments/inventories to be sure they are appropriate!

    • Using the Occupational Prestige exercise and the Work Values Card Sort activity, follow the directions and use them on your self. Print out the exercises and mark the Occupational Prestige table, as well as print and cut the Work Values Card Sort to use as a manipulative. Complete the exercises and answer the debriefing questions at the end of the exercises. If your client received these results, what assistance could you give them?

As an additional optional exercise, administer them to someone in your family, or a close friend and process how the results have impacted their choices of career, and how they might use the results if a career change is considered. Be sure to remind them you are a student, and you are not counseling them or offering results based on the assessments.

  3. By Saturday, post your response in the whole group discussion forum titled, Week 10: Career Assessments.

  4. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week and contribute at least two additional substantive postings to two different students by Monday. Be sure that you are substantially discussing the information with your classmates, and not just agreeing or disagreeing with them. Short comments or acknowledgements will not earn the points desired for a passing grade.

Career Assessment using the Campbell Interest and Skill Survey (CISS) - Javier (Whole Group)

Introduction:

The Campbell Interest and Skill Survey is similar to the Strong Interest Inventory – it also measures interests and one’s self-reported skill levels. Its major purpose is to help individuals understand how their interests and skills map into the occupational world and thus to help them make better career choices. The CISS focuses on careers that require postsecondary education and is most appropriate for those who are college bound. This exercise focuses on Javier, who is working with his college career counselor.

Directions:

  1. Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings.

  2. Download and read through the Javier case study and the Javier CISS report.

  3. By Saturday, each student should read through the scenario and post a response in the Week 10: Career Assessments-Javier whole group discussion forum by responding to questions provided. Please keep responses short and concise.

  4. Revisit the discussion forum multiple times throughout the week. Contribute at least two additional substantive postings by Monday.

Assignment: Weekly Quizzes (Individual)

Introduction:

There is a quiz each week that is taken directly from the textbook, and covers items you will need to know to prepare you for the NCE exam. The quiz contains all multiple choice questions, and they come directly from the text. These are open book, open note quizzes, and they must be completed by the end of each week.

Each quiz will reset on Sunday, for anyone who needs to retake it. You may retake it for more new questions, or you may retake it to increase your grade. In either case, when there are two grades, the highest grade will be used for your final grade. If there is one grade, that will be used. Taking it twice cannot harm your grade. Correct answers are posted after the quiz is no longer available for a grade; which is two weeks following the week it was made available.

Directions:

  1. Review the directions and scoring tool for this assignment, located on the Syllabus page.
  2. Be sure that you have completed the assigned readings and have your book with you when you take the quiz.
  3. To take this week's quiz, click on Gradebook and then click on "Quiz 11."
  4. Complete and submit the quiz by the end of this week.
  5. If you need or wish to retake the quiz, click on "Gradebook" and then click on "Quiz 11 Retake."
