Think Abouts for Classroom Management

  • Does your school have a school wide Positive Behavior Intervention System in place and how can you implement that in your classroom standards?
  • How will you set up your classroom to make the classroom accessible for all students?
  • Where will you post your standards?
  • Where will you post your reward system?
  • How will you reward your students and what are the consequences for students?

Classroom Management Strategies

1. Use a Positive Behavior Intervention with the whole class and enforce from the beginning of the school year.

  • Reinforce the standards/ rules as necessary.
  • This must be followed with fidelity to work efficiently.

2. Set standards with the students for the classroom. These should be four to five standards that the students will follow to keep structure in the classroom.

3. Use a three tiered reward system for classroom behavior. This would include individual points or reward system, whole class rewards and team points and rewards. A shared sense of purpose promotes a willingness to work together and assist others.

4. Use charts and checklists to help student follow classroom rules, use and organization of materials and equipment.

5. Use students’ names frequently when talking to them. This personalizes your message and makes them feel they have your attention.

6. Utilize non-verbal cues to settle the class when needed. Try every-hand-raised or switching classroom lights, etc.

7. Give students a set time to accomplish tasks. Provide cues/benchmarks for completion. Anticipate and adjust assignments (rather than time) to meet learner needs.

8. Plan specifically for whole-class participation, from the simple Thumbs-up/down to the thoughtful “think-pair-share.”
9. The teacher should model an “assertive, equitable and positive behaviors” (Hall & Hall, 2003, Rogers and Renard, 1999).

10. The teacher should build an effective relationship between themself and the student. (Hall & Hall, 2003)
