Modeling the TARGET Action Steps

You will need to scaffold the modeling of the TARGET Action Steps. Consider demonstrating one role per day, or even one role per week. Do not rush students into using the TARGET forms independently. It is essential that students have a thorough understanding of each role before the TARGET Action steps are applied on an independent level.

•  Model each step of TARGET using a visualizer or overhead. Many teachers focus on one step in TARGET each day. Day 1: T. Day 2: A. Day 3: R etc.
•  Be sure to create different scenarios that would reflect actual situations that students would encounter during TARGET set-up. Often it is helpful to let your students brainstorm such scenarios.
•  Assign roles using the numbers given for "Number-Heads" (1-Facilitator; 2-Supply Manager; 3-Coach; 4/5-Recorder/Data Manager).
•  Review each role carefully and thoroughly.
•  As a whole group, guide all teams through each TARGET action step one at a time.
•  TARGET Action Steps should be practiced until they are mastered by all students. The class should be given many opportunities for earning chips while practicing these procedures.
