Double Entry Journal

A Double Entry Journal is an excellent strategy to help students relate to what they read. It gives them an opportunity to take notes on the reading and write their thoughts about what they have read and how it relates to the topic along with relating the reading to prior knowledge.

Instructions:

  1. Allows students to take notes and respond at the same time.
  2. Fold paper in half and label one half “Notes from the Text” and the other half “Notes from My Mind”
  3. As students read they record a passage or word from the text and then make their comment about that passage. The student may also use the student may also draw an illustration to help them remember their notes.
