Before Reading Strategies
- Anticipation Guide - An Anticipation Guide is initially used as a pre-reading strategy. It is a means of getting the students interested in what they are about to read.
- Use Vocabulary from the Text - This is a pre-reading strategy that will get the students excited about what they are about to read.
- KWL (Know, Wonder, Learn) - Having the students complete a "Know, Wonder, Learn" Chart is a way of the students connecting prior experiences to the passage.
- Comparing and Contrasting - The students will compare and contrast 2 characters or 2 pieces in the text prior to reading the text.
- Up and About - This pre-reading strategy will help to get the students interested in the topic or passage they will be reading.
Strategies to be used in more than one area:

Cloze Procedure - The Cloze Procedure is used to assess students comprehension knowledge. It gives them an opportunity to read a passage missing words and they enter words they know that will give the sentence and passage meaning. During 'Before Reading", the teacher could build prior knowledge with this strategy.
