Anticipation Guide
To use an Anticipation Guide the teacher writes four or five statements about what may happen in the story the students will be reading. Prior to the statement is an Agree and Disagree box. The students, individually or as a team read the statements and determine if they agree that the statement is true and part of the story, or if they disagree and feel it is not a theme or part of the story.
After reading the story they reflect back on the Anticipation Guide and see if they were correct in their hypothesis. The students may also review the guide as they are reading the passage.
Instructions:
- Have the students complete the Anticipation Guide.
- Statements that will encourage conversation by the students.
- Statements around themes in the text.
- You only need to list a few items.
- Students agree or disagree with the statement prior to reading and then revisit after reading.
- Introduce the strategy by modeling one before having the students work independently or in team.
- Use it before and after reading.
