KWL (Know, Wonder, Learn)

Having the students complete a "Know, Wonder, Learn" Chart is a way of the students connecting prior experiences to the passage.

Instructions:

1.  Decide the topic of the KWL Chart based on the reading passage. It can also be used in Content areas.
2.  Decide how you will record the topic (whether it's on paper, a large chart, etc.).
3.  Ask the students what they know about the topic and write it in the Know column.
4.  Before reading, the students fill in the Know column.
5.  Connect what they know to what they want to know in the Wonder column.
6.  The Learn column can be used as a review column. (This can be completed during and after reading.)
