Electronic Learning Community (ELC)

Welcome to an overview of the Johns Hopkins University School of Education’s Electronic Learning Community tool. Developed by the Center for Technology in Education, the online learning platform houses many courses delivered by JHU’s School of Education. Read below to learn some of the main features you will use as part of your online learning experience.

Beginning on the far top left, the Announcements tab provides information about the week ahead, a summary of the week gone by, or any new information to help you through the professional development.  The tab to the right of Announcements is Discussion.  This is where you will post reflections throughout the professional development.  It is also where you interact with others during the upcoming weeks. The final tab next to Discussion is Assessment.  Here, you will take brief assessments relating to each of the 4 stages of the Coaching Cycle.

To post a comment or reflection in the Discussion tab, simply:
1. Click on the forum relevant to your content.
2. Click on the thread that you need to access.
3. Click on Reply in the original posting.
4. Click in the Title box and type a new title.
5. Click in the Entry box and type your response.
6. Click Submit.

The Overview page (on the left) includes an introduction to your professional development, along with tabs to access the foundations and structure of the program, what to expect from the professional development, how to communicate online, and any additional general information regarding the professional development.

Actual content is found below the Overview. Here you see the professional development divided into the Four Stages of the Coaching Cycle:  The Partnership:  COACH, Discovery, Action-Plan, and Debriefing.  Each stage follows a consistent cycle of instruction. The six sections of the cycle are Set Up, Presentation, I-Learn or Learning Together, Just for Me, Assessment, and Wrap Up.  Clicking each section gives you access to the content and activities.

The Practicum page provides specific procedures for conducting an online coaching field-based project in which you apply your newly acquired knowledge and skills.

The Resources page offers a wide range of rich publications and media resources relevant to effective models and practices of face-to-face and online coaching.

Now that you’re familiar with the Electronic Learning Community and its features, you’re welcome to get started. Best wishes for an enjoyable online learning experience.
