The Team-Based Cycle of Instruction: Part 2

In a Boundless Learning classroom, the primary teaching responsibility is to ensure that every student is successfully engaged in learning— that means all students are engaged in learning 90% of the time. Boundless Learning co-teachers strive toward that goal every day. They maintain a keen focus on keeping interactive instructional time at the highest level possible. View the presentation below to learn more about the last four stages of the TBCI.

While you are viewing, think about:

  • How does the way teachers use instructional time impact their students?
  • How well do co-teachers share instructional roles and responsibilities throughout the instructional period?
  • How do teachers use specific roles to maximize the instructional time available?

The B-D-A (Before, During, After) Protocol

Teachers can use the BDA Protocol to prompt student groups/teams to self-assess their understanding of directions and concepts before, during and after the activity. This Learning Together Protocol can be used to keep students on task and monitor their learning during Learning Together.

The Power Partner Learning Guide

Teachers can use the Power Partner Learning Guide to help student partners remain focused on the Learning Goal and Challenge Question, and to ensure that each partner contributes meaningfully to the activity. The Power Partner Learning Guide should be used alongside a specific set of directions for a given activity.

The Learning Together Guide

The Learning Together Guide is designed to be used with highly structured team activities in classrooms implementing student learning teams at an advanced level. A sample math team activity and the accompanying Learning Together Guide is provided below.  First review the sample math activity and then review how the Learning Together Guide is used along with the activity. Step-by-step instructions for creating and using a Learning Together Guide can be found in the second document below.

Note: If teachers decide to use the Learning Together Guide they should also consider teaching students the Boundless Learning High Performance Teaming Principles and Operating Standards, adapting them as needed for student use.

Discovery Cards

Teachers can use Discovery Cards during the Just for Me stage of the Team-Based Cycle of Instruction to help students capture the big ideas related to the content presentation and application activities. Information gathered from the Discovery Cards can be used along with assessment information to guide instructional grouping for subsequent lessons. It is important to remember to set clear time limits during this activity.

Challenge Question Check

Teachers can use the Challenge Question Check as a simple way to collect formative assessment information at the end of the lesson. They might also invite students to share answers to the Challenge Question on Post-It notes, in journals, or aloud with a partner or small group.

WRAP-Up

Teachers can use this step-by-step protocol to promote self-regulation by outlining specific procedures for organizing closure activities.

Optionally, teachers may have each team report out their team’s performance rating. The students should stand at the Ready to Exit Time and share their performance rating to the Learning Community before students are dismissed. The teacher may approve or override the performance rating.
