Differentiated Lesson

Just as doctors draw from an ever-growing base of knowledge about medicine to effectively treat individual patients, so do teachers draw from their ever-growing knowledge of differentiation to effectively plan instruction that will meet the individual needs of their students. In this module, you will engage in this process by planning and implementing a differentiated lesson based on the learner variances among your students. You will plan your lesson in Weeks 1-4 and implement it by the end of Week 4. You will reflect on your implementation in the Week 5. To begin, follow the instructions below.

Follow the instructions below to begin your planning.

Instructions:

  • Get to know your students:
-

Review the strategies described in the “Getting to Know Your Students” section in Chapter 4 of the text and the differentiation strategies described in Chapters 5 and 6, assigned in the readings for Weeks 3–4.

-

Choose and implement a strategy to get to know one student or a group of students in your classroom and record the data you collect on the Differentiation Lesson Plan Template (provided in the Handouts box). You may opt to use another lesson plan template (e.g., one used in your school), however, be sure to include a section on learner variances, as show in the highlighted section of the Differentiation Lesson Plan Template.

  • Plan your lesson:
-

Look through a unit you will be teaching within the next 4 weeks and identify an objective you expect all students to meet.

-

Analyze your most recent assessment data related to your learning objective.

-

Considering your studentsstrengths, needs, preferences, and assessment data, plan a differentiated lesson according to students’ readiness, interests, and/or learning profiles. Use the Differentiation Lesson Plan Template provided in the Handouts box or another lesson plan template.

-

You will implement this lesson in Week 3 or 4.

-

In Weeks 3–4, you will learn strategies for managing differentiation in your classroom. Before you implement your lesson, you will plan how you will integrate these management strategies during your lesson. In the Weeks 3–4 Discussion, you will share your experience in implementing your lesson and in using the management strategies.

You will submit your lesson in Week 4. There is nothing to submit this week.

 Proceed to week 2.
