Learning Together

As mentioned in the presentation, protocols structure procedures that facilitate implementation. In the case of co-teaching, the TBCI Role Protocol provides a structure for segmenting lessons and sharing instructional roles among all members of a co-teaching team. As part of the planning process, co-teachers collaborate to determine the content to be delivered, the instructional strategies employed, as well as who leads, supports, or monitors instruction and student understanding during an entire class period. The TBCI is intended to augment your standard lesson planning format and instructional delivery systems.

This Learning Together exercise provides an opportunity for your co-teaching team to examine your lessons and your classroom roles. The purpose of the activity is to gain insight into structured routines that open your lesson and how instructional delivery occurs. Explore resources like the Set Up Template to guide your students through a consistent start to your lessons.

Directions:
1) Prepare for the activity. As a team, download and save the Team-Based Cycle of Instruction Role Protocol template to the computer. Choose one person to be the recorder for your team.

2) Collaborate as a team to complete the document:

  • Review the stages of the Team-Based Cycle of Instruction and the purpose within each stage.
  • Use the time percentages for each stage to help you segment your lesson into the six stages of the TBCI. Enter the time allotted to each stage in the "Time" column.
  • Write a detailed plan for Set Up and Presentation. Indicate specific roles for each member of your co-teaching team during these stages of instruction.

3) After completing the template, use the H: High Performing, O: On-Track, T: Target Improvement rating system to evaluate the balance of roles and responsibilities among all members of your team.
