It may be a trite saying, but as far as neuro- and cognitive sciences are concerned, a picture does paint a thousand words. Consider putting a jigsaw puzzle together without seeing the picture on the box. Students are often introduced to new content yet they are given no reference point to make connections. Integrating the arts is a powerful, brain-compatible practice for helping students see the “big picture” and learning.
This week focuses on Brain-Target Three: Designing the Learning Experience and on Brain-Target Four: Teaching for Mastery of Content, Skills, and Concepts. You will learn how arts integration facilitates repeated rehearsal and elaboration, which promote understanding, memory, and retention. |
