As a special educator, you are not working alone, isolated from school peers and resource personnel. Your support team includes specialists, administrators, and of course, the student and family. Not only are you required to collaborate with others, but your best work will be evident when you involve a team in planning and implementing student services. Special education advocate Rick Lavoie (2008) wrote, “The great majority of home/school crises (and lawsuits!) are a direct result of poor communication.”

This week’s resources and Assessment will target your communication, investment, and collaboration with others in an effort to avoid crises and lawsuits, and to best meet students’ needs.
