Goals, Objectives, and Accommodations
A student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) must meet federal requirements; however, forms and formats may differ slight by state or district. While an IEP can be 20–40 pages long, three sections are particularly important for special educators who must determine what supports will assist their students with special needs:
- annual goals
- objectives (benchmarks which measure change)
- accommodations
For this Assessment, you will have the opportunity to practice writing goals, objectives, and accommodations that comply with federal regulations.
Instructions:
There are two documents that will guide you with your task: IEP Sample Handout and IEP Assessment Handout.
- The IEP Sample Handout includes material drawn from actual IEPs accompanied by a critique of the strong and weak examples. Read it carefully to study important elements of a student’s IEP.
- The IEP Assessment Handout uses a similar format with space for you to write appropriate goals, objectives, and accommodations for one of your students.
- Submit the completed IEP Assessment Handout.
Save this Assessment as “IEP_firstinitiallastname” and submit it to the Gradebook by the end of Week 3.
