How you teach grammar to your English language learners depends largely on who they are. Students in primary grades can learn many of the grammar concepts they need through song and play, while secondary students need help bridging the larger distance between their English proficiency and the demands of their content-area classes. Newcomers to this country will have different kinds of background knowledge than “Generation 1.5” students who have grown up in the U.S., which will in turn affect the way they use and learn English language forms.

This week you will learn more about the learners, focusing on the strengths and assets their language diversity brings to the classroom. You will use this lens to create a detailed portrait of your own ELL classroom.
