Becoming familiar with the language proficiencies of your ELLs requires close analysis of their independent work, as seen in writing samples or in pair, small-group, or large group oral participation. Getting in the habit of regularly examining your students’ work will allow you to plan more effective instruction as you use the results of your assessments and analysis to reteach a tricky concept or provide more support to certain students.
This week you will learn how to collect samples of student writing and speaking and how to conduct informal, formative assessments. You will also learn about typical grammar-related questions ELLs ask and how to respond to them effectively.
