Second language acquisition scholars emphasize the social nature of language learning—which is not simply about learning rules and minimizing errors but also about learning how to communicate successfully. That said, as a K–12 teacher your job is to help your ELLs bridge the achievement gap by understanding and producing sophisticated language structures. In order to do this, you need to know how the English language works so that you can pass that learning on to your students.

This week, you will start an inquiry into the structure of English by examining the verb system and learning what kinds of problems ELLs typically experience with it.
